About the Tour

Classical Athens is generally regarded as the birthplace of the world’s first democracy. Systematic excavations of its civic center, the Agora, by American archaeologists in the 20th and 21st c. have revealed not only the location of government buildings but also a tremendous number of objects that have greatly added to our understanding of how this earliest democracy in fact functioned. Today a glorious archaeological park at the base of the Acropolis, this lecture will present an overview of the Agora site, its monuments which include the most well preserved ancient temple in Greece, and exciting finds housed in the site museum which will animate civic life in Athens of the 5th c. BC. *title borrowed from a 2015 lecture by Dr. John McK. Camp, Director of the Athenian Agora Excavations 𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗢𝗥: Iris Plaitakis Iris Plaitakis is an artist, archaeologist, and museum educator.
