About the Tour

Join us in a breathtaking location, atop the hill of the Pnyx, across from the Acropolis and the Agora, where citizens of Athens aged over 20 gathered, partaking the most powerful ruling body of the famous Classical democracy, the Assembly of the People. Forming a small percentage of the entire population of the Athenian city-state, the highly privileged citizen body enjoyed full civil rights and other exclusive benefits in what has been labelled as the most participatory and open-access democratic regime of all time! Relive the original sights, sounds, and sensations from when the Pnyx was teeming with life and molded the future of Classical Athens, as you follow our virtual footprints around the site and marvel at its scenery and monuments! - Where would the platform or bema be located for the speakers, and where would the Assembly be seated? - How and why was the configuration altered over time, and how did the Pnyx’'s capacity change to meet the demands of a developing democracy? - How often would the People of Athens convene? Which officials would set the agenda and preside over the meeting and what sort of issues would be discussed? - Who would be entitled to take the podium and who would dare deliver a pithy public speech, in actuality? - How would the assembled citizens vote at the end of each session? ✅𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗢𝗥: Dr. Anthi Dipla Anthi is a Classical archaeologist/art historian who has graduated from Oxford University (MA, PhD).
