About the Tour

Thessalonica, the second most important city of the Byzantine Empire and closely connected with the capital, maintains a large number of monuments, which reflect characteristics of the Orthodox worship. Its Upper City, the ‘City above the City’, preserves a cultural explosion of monuments, which include the churches of Hosios David (originally the catholicon of Latomou Monastery), of St. Catherine, of St. Nicholas Orphanos (also originally the catholicon of a monastery), of the Taxiarches (the Archangels Michael and Gabriel), and of the Vlatadon Monastery, which is the only Byzantine monastery that survives in modern times. With the exception of the early Christian church of Hosios David, the remaining monuments belong to the 14th century, which was marked by the civil war between Andronicus II Palaeologus and his grandson, Andronicus III (1321-1328) and by the Zealot movement (1342-1350).
